Part 8: Grand Canal Greenway Shared Walking and Cycling Route - BALLYCOMMON TO KILBEGGAN LINK

Part 8: Grand Canal Greenway Shared Walking and Cycling Route - BALLYCOMMON TO KILBEGGAN LINK

 Wed, 29th May, 2019

Please be advised that Offaly County Council propose to construct a shared walking and cycling greenway route (2 metres in width) along the towpath of the former Kilbeggan branch of the Grand Canal for a distance of 7.5km. The route of the proposed shared greenway is from Campbells’s Bridge, Ballycommon (Grand Canal mainline) to the County Boundary, with County Westmeath at the Silver River aqueduct.

It is intended that this proposal will form part of an overall strategic link between the Grand Canal and the Royal Canal, with a joined-up approach to the overall delivery of this strategic link being undertaken by Westmeath County Council, Offaly County Council and Waterways Ireland.

The proposed development, which is the subject of this Part 8, will include the following:

1. Improvements to the existing towpath through the provision of a suitable surface (i.e. Surface Dressing, Asphaltic Concrete, Quarry Dust or other surface as appropriate for an approximate 1.5km through Bracklin Bog.

2. Provision of traffic safety measures and signage to facilitate safe pedestrian and cycling crossings at junctions with public roads.

3. Provision of access controls (pedestrian/cycling friendly gates/bollards) facilitating the proposed cycle/walk way, where required.

4. Ancillary Works.
